James Earl Carter Jr. was born in 1924 in Georgia. He grew to be a gifted student, and was very fond of reading. In college he studied nuclear physics, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. Carter served on submarines as a nuclear engineer until he retired from the Navey in 1953. Carter's political career began in the 1960's, when he served on the Georgia State Senate. From 1971-1975 Carter served as Governor of Georgia. Carter was elected 39th President of the United States in 1977.
